I am down with a fever as I write this. So that you don’t worry, it is not caused by germs but by the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. I can’t take my eyes off the screen! I am totally emersed in the games. It doesn’t matter what is on. I love all the sports. Luge, skating, snow boarding, speed skating, biathlon! They are all so fascinating.
I have watched as skiers have been separated by one nine hundredth of a second. Snowboarders have leapt through the air to pass their competitors. Figure skaters have skated their hearts out in beautiful fluid programs. What unites these athletes? They are searching for their personal best. They want to get to the end of the race or the program knowing that they had done all they could do, pushing themselves to the max. They have trained and prepared for this one moment in time. And the medal is not the ultimate goal.
These athletes have a lot to teach us. It is their heart and their spirit that makes them champions. They are willing to face great odds, dangerous conditions, exhibiting great courage and strength. What are we willing to do? How far are we willing to push our hearts and spirits for the work that God puts before us?
As I head back to Vancouver and the Olympics I think about our church and what we are going to put our energy in. How will we live out God’s will? What will be our personal best? Hmmm. A lot to think about.

Outreach News
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
As I survey our community, I see countless people in need of Jesus’ love and healing touch. You may ponder, as I do, how you can reach out and make a difference in so many lives. It’s a difficult challenge to take on as an individual, but I am convinced that as American Baptists working together, we can make a difference by supporting the America for Christ Offering 2010.
This year’s theme - “With Willing Hands: Connect. Care. Celebrate” - is a powerful reminder that Jesus’ public ministry was all about connecting and caring for people in need. Through the work of National Ministries, which is supported by the America for Christ Offering, we can participate with our Lord in connecting, caring, and celebrating the power of the Gospel:
as people come to know the saving grace of Jesus Christ;
as children in poverty are reached through the Penny Project;
as youth, children, and adults grow in discipleship;
as communities are changed through Christian centers;
as we increase church vitality through the Church in Mission trainings; and
as we help to support and relocate refugees into churches and communities.
The America for Christ Offering 2010 strengthens our churches by providing support to our pastoral counselors and chaplains, designing leadership workshops and conferences, promoting excellent discipleship resources through Judson Press, and providing opportunities for churches, individuals, and youth groups to participate in home mission through Volunteer Ministries.
We are encouraged by this year’s theme to come alongside people “with willing hands” to connect, care, and celebrate. How do we see Jesus at work in our community and country? How can we help Jesus with this important work?
Please join us in giving generously to the America for Christ Offering 2010 and help us to reach our goal. Together we can touch and change lives for the cause of Christ. Together we can make a difference.
“For the love of Christ urges us on…” (2 Corinthians 5: 14-15).
Sincerely in Christ,
The Board of Christian Outreach

Music Announcements
We are working hard on our Youth Musical, “Once Upon a Parable” by Tom Long and Allen Pote. We will be presenting it twice on Sunday, March 21. At 9:15, we will present it for Sunday school students at St. Joseph Church in their chapel. Then, we will present it here at Bristol Baptist Church during the 10:30 worship service. You will want to be present to see all the creativity, talent, and hard work our youth have poured into this show!
Many thanks to Amy Kelley who ably substituted for Bill Degan on January 31. That same Sunday, Brian Dove, our newest bass in the Adult Choir, sang the solo part to the spiritual, “Amen, Amen.” Way to go, Brian!
Our fine clarinetist, Chrissy Dove will lead us twice during Lent in March, as she plays clarinet along with the Bell Choir in two Lenten hymns.
Looking ahead to Palm/Passion Sunday, the Bell Choir will be playing and the Adult Choir is preparing a moving anthem, “Saw Ye My Savior?”
Then, on Easter Sunday, a brass quartet from Bristol Central High School will be playing on several selections. In addition, we will be featuring special guest soprano soloist, Kelle Barrieau in an Easter anthem entitled, “Ride On, King Jesus.”
Pipe organ news:
In January, Bill Degan met Richard Hamar, a fine, exper-ienced organ builder from Norwich, whose specialty is restoring historic pipe organs. Bill found out that Richard has a small historic pipe organ in storage that he would love to set up in a beautiful sanctuary like ours. It is an 1892 Gilbert and Butler pipe organ that was formerly in a church in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. The wind system needs rebuilding but the pipes and keyboards are in good shape. When Bill mentioned this at the annual meeting, there was excitement among many, partly because Mr. Hamar quoted a cost that we might be able to afford.
Mr. Hamar came to Bristol Baptist in late January to take measurements. He will be reporting to us how we might place this organ in the chancel, perhaps where our Adult Choir sits now. Note: we do not need to remove the Allen organ, which we should keep for when we need a louder sound. He believes that he can rebuild it for us for $30,000, with the help of church volunteers to do tasks such as carefully moving and cleaning pipes. We presently have $7,700 in our pipe organ fund. Please prayerfully consider whether a real, wind blown instrument would be a proper addition to our sanctuary and how we might pay for it.
